Seven ways to stay connected this Thanksgiving
I love spending Thanksgiving with my family, but some of my relatives live in the states or abroad elsewhere. However, we still try our best to stay connected around the holiday.
That's why we've listed our seven favourite holiday activities, perfect for at home or long distance family.
1. Make a family tree
Feeling disconnected from your family this Thanksgiving? Learning about family history can be so rewarding, especially for children. Why not use our quick and easy guide to make your own family tree?
2. Play some classic parlour games via video chat
Although everyone is pretty tired of Zoom by now it offers a great opportunity to chat to your loved ones this Thanksgiving. As well as the usual catch up, take the opportunity to have a little fun with some family favourite parlour games. Some of our favourites to play online are charades, pictionary and would you rather. Check out the play section of our website for more historical activities and quizzes.
3. Watch a movie together
What better way to celebrate a Thanksgiving at home than curling up to watch a cosy fall movie. Get connected with absent friends and family by using Netflix party to watch and comment at the same time. Check out this list of Thanksgiving classics for a bit of inspiration.
4. Cards and crafts to send in the mail
Got family members unable to join you for the big day? Why not send them a surprise in the mail with this easy Turkey handprint card. Write inside why you’re thankful for them and send them off for a homemade Thanksgiving surprise.
5. Watch Macy’s thanksgiving parade
Share that warm Thanksgiving feeling with your far away family by watching the televised Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade at the same time.
6. Go on a walk
Rather than having a traditional inside meal why not celebrate with a beautiful fall walk. Explore a route for the first time or visit an old family favourite.
7. Make a display of the things you’re thankful for
Despite having a difficult year it’s still important to focus on what we can be grateful for. Get each family member to write down something that they’re thankful for this year. Use some old cardboard or even a photo frame as a base to create a mood board of everyone’s notes. Get creative! Add in some family photos or even some fall leaves (maybe from your Thanksgiving walk). You could do this virtually with your friends and family by mailing your notes to the person creating the board.
