Lydia and her family left their home in Bristol and traveled to Plymouth for the long voyage from England to the American Colonies in 1760. Back then, traveling from Britain to America was not at all like it is now - today we can get from England to the East Coast of America in just a few hours, on a comfortable aeroplane and enjoy films, tv and hot meals during the trip ! Back in the 18th century, a voyage like this could only be made by ship and could take anywhere from 2-6 months.
Could you imagine being on board a ship for 6 months??
The Peyton family were very lucky because they could afford to pay the high cost of their voyage to the Colonies. So Lydia and her family would have had a teeny private cabin all to themselves and plenty of exercise and fresh air walking (or playing) on the deck of the ship. They even would have had fresh food during the voyage.
But not everyone was so lucky. People who were too poor to pay for the trip would travel in horribly cramped quarters below deck, with very little fresh air and practically no fresh food. A lot of people got ill from being cooped up for months on end and some of them even died before they reached the New World.
Then, in order to pay for the voyage, they would sell themselves as 'indentured servants' on arrival to the Colonies - that means when they arrived, someone would pay for their passage and they would then have to work without wages, until that debt was paid off. Sometimes it took years!
But the New World offered lots of opportunities and Europeans continued to flock to the Colonies, despite the dangerous journey. Lydia and her family would have seen Boston grow into an important city in a very short time.
