Lydia wants to do things her own way....

Oh bother! 

We’re going riding.
Why does Father insist on me riding side saddle? I don’t care if it’s ladylike. I want to be free and gallop through the forest on my own and practice my jumping. It’s certainly more fun than trying to sit properly on my horse... I can barely balance - never mind ride - side saddle. My hat falls in my eyes and my long skirt and riding habit gets tangled in the horse’s legs. I’ve heard of so many horrible accidents that happen to the ladies who ride side saddle - why do they still insist?

Christmas used to be illegal!

I did not realize that Christmas used to be illegal here in Boston! How very strange it is to hear such things, but until 1681 you could be fined as much as five shillings for showing one’s holiday spirit. Even now it isn’t even a holiday here and people seem intent on continuing their work – although my parents will no longer be fined if they wish to mark the day in some way, thank goodness!

 

We do at least have a new Christmas hymn to sing at Church called Hymn on the Nativity, which has been written by a fellow Englishman, and will remind me of the carols we used to sing in Bristol..

A Thanksgiving meal

Today my parents and I are partaking in a thanksgiving meal with our neighbours. It is something new to us but it appears such feasts are a more common occurrence here in the colonies and happen where there is some great event to celebrate. We are giving thanks for the towns return to normality after the great fire earlier this year, so we will of course have to say lots of prayers at church before any feasting or dancing or anything fun happens. Given that King George only died last month I am not sure that the new governor approves of any celebrations at all …

I wonder if I can wear my new party dress and whom I will meet there?
